Introduction

KPing is a DOS utility for enumerating and exploring the networks your computer is attached to.

KPing is freeware and the source code can be obtained by emailing myself, PerlCrown.

Description

KPing will check for live computers on the network you specify. It checks the list of IPs you define, via the IP and subnet you define, with an ICMP ping request. Any replies are logged and the hostname resolved.

The true range of uses for this program is unknown to me. Here is a list of uses i have found so far:

# I have used it at work to get a "feel" for the network topologies and server locations.

# I have used it at work for locating free IPs when assigning static IPs for new computers on the network.

# I have used it to resolve hostnames for IPs I already knew.

# I have used it at home to locate the IP address's of wireless devices which connect via DHCP.

Extra command line options include:

-i => provides info on Kping version etc...

-n => resolve hostnames (much quicker)

-r => produce a report to a file (kpreport.txt)

-t => <timeout> timeout for pings in milliseconds (default 100ms)
